Cluj-Napoca, a Major IT Hub

An article from Business Review (BR) that analyzes the main IT Hubs in Romania presents Cluj-Napoca as one of the major independent regional poles for investments in IT products, services and outsourcing in Romania.  While Bucharest had long been perceived as the best choice for IT companies, this is no longer the case.

Company executives and ministers interviewed by BR present Cluj-Napoca as an IT hub with advantages that are difficult to ignore, such as the presence of an international airport with direct connections to important European capitals, an excellent IT infrastructure, around 800 highly skilled IT professionals graduating annually from local universities, the highest proportion of college students per 1000 inhabitants in Romania, a modern and constantly improving infrastructure, and the desire to make from Cluj a Romanian version of the Silicon Valley voiced by Lucian Isar, minister-delegate for the business environment.

“Our proposal for Cluj, based on the evolution of the city, the city's potential and the human capital, is to start a Silicon Valley,” said Isar. “You have fundamental advantages, and we feel the business environment would want such a level of business in Cluj, which the state can facilitate,” said Isar.

The Times ranked Romania sixth among the top ten emerging outsourcing destinations, having constantly improved its reputation as a leader in IT outsourcing.

Voicu Oprean, CEO of AROBS Transilvania Software, shared his views on Regional Romanian IT hubs with the BR reporter.  According to him, “International studies carried out over the past two to three years place Cluj, for instance, among the top 50 cities in the world for outsourcing opportunities, especially in IT. The Cluj International Airport, with connections to the most important European capitals, the investments made by foreign companies, the fiber optic backbone and technical infrastructure are other reasons for the good image that this city has when it comes to outsourcing”.
