Precision farming and sustainability

Precision farming expertise sustainability

Precision farming and sustainability

Precision farming is not a new concept. It boosts the efficiency of agriculture with the use of technology. However, the output is something even more important, sustainability.

With the use of customized software development that now leans into the field of IoT agriculture becomes more manageable than ever before. Therefore, with precise forecast, real-time, and near-real-time monitoring, accurate measurement, has three main benefits.

It maximizes output, increases workplace safety, and facilitates sustainability.

Maximized output

Until then use of IoT technology for agricultural purposes this sector was characterized by intense labor, volatility, and high vulnerability to climatic factors. Furthermore, there are two definitory changes: the exponential increase in demand due to the growth of the global population and global warming. These create circumstances that require to speed-up precision farming.

According to the UN, currently, the world’s population is 7.6 billion. By 2050 we will reach 9.7 billion and 11.2 billion by 2100. At the same time, the average number of calories needed to sustain the body at rest is around 2000/day/person. This is the main reason for the need for maximized output.

Increased work safety

Agricultural labor is one of the most exposed to injuries. These accidents take up to almost 20% of all workplace injuries. Given the repetitive tasks, workers are less aware of the dangers of their job. With automation, the worker doesn’t need to have direct contact with dangerous machinery.

Furthermore, these are more exposed to respiratory risks, heath stress, chemical hazards, and noise pollution.

Among the most relevant technologies to be used are agricultural robots, satellite imagery, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, according to the EU. These are stipulated in the declaration of cooperation for a sustainable digital future for European Agriculture.

With precision agriculture these risks are minimized, hence this is the most efficient way to keep agriculture worker’s safety.

Sustainability

With the help of big data, the right amount of resources is being used for certain agricultural purposes. Thus, unnecessary use of these is avoided, which not only results in cost-efficiency but also sustainability. The right distribution of resources leads to an environment-friendly approach to this essential sector for humanity.

Avoiding waste is essential for sustainability. Through technology, farmers have exact data about the status of crops, fields, or animals. Hence, agricultural workers can intervene strictly where it is needed. Also, by reducing the use of toxic material like pesticides agriculture becomes less harmful to the environment. Plus, through automatic checking, the farmers reduce fuel-consumption drastically.

Hence, there are several advantages to using precision farming. Not only for the increasing profitability but for the safety of labor, and most importantly for a sustainable future.

However, studies show that there is still a reticence in adopting this technology. The main reason is the fear of the unknown and the attachment of traditional methods, outweighing all proven benefits.

Precision farming expertise

The best way of fighting it the education and self-education of the decision-makers in the agricultural industry. The first step is finding trust-worthy partners with expertise. With over 20 years of experience in software outsourcing for multiple industries, the expertise on IoT and Enterprise Solutions stands out in AROBS.

From successful projects on forestry to agriculture, industry know-how is the most valuable asset. Results like forest growth calculation models, laser scanning forest assets, integrated map systems, simultaneous management of 8000 projects, 10 times improved response time, and many more.

Choose your partner and embrace the digital transformation of the agricultural sector.

Cloud-ready applications – is it for you?

cloud-ready application

Cloud-ready applications – what are the benefits for you?

Cloud-ready applications might be the answer to our fast technological development of today. We witness a never-before growth of businesses. In no time small start-ups can scale up to global giants thanks to the power of technology. But a big company has very different needs than a small one. That is when the management should reflect on different enterprise solutions. And due to its flexibility, the tendency is to opt for cloud-ready applications.

As you start onboarding new employees or customers the need for more – hardware, more storage, maintenance operation, security – grows. The traditional way of doing business relies on on-site resources. On the other hand, the cloud-ready architecture permits a more diverse distribution of resources since the hosting is no longer local, it is virtual. This resource distribution is over a WAN (wide-area network).

Cloud-ready application – explained

Remember when you had a 30 MB memory stick because it was the highest technology available on the market? You had to keep all your important data on it. And every time you had some new data you had to delete previous ones to free up some space. You feel this limitation when you have your application running on-premise too.

Actually, you do make use of a cloud. Especially if you have an iPhone. Instead of keeping your photos on your phone you can keep them on the iCloud. The same principle applies when it comes to your business.

A cloud-ready application means that the tools you use for the everyday existence of your business like, communicational systems, customer management systems, billing systems, marketing systems, etc. are ready to be migrated into a cloud environment. This means possibly embracing the PaaS (platform-as-a-service) ability of the cloud.

Do cloud-ready applications enjoy all the benefits the cloud can offer?

The answer is no. Cloud-ready applications can benefit from a limited number of the benefits the cloud environment can offer. Why? Because the applications that need to be prepared for the cloud were created for the traditional environment. This means the application has to be analyzed and understood. You need to come up with an action list that has to be done in order to move the product to comply with the cloud requirements.

However, there are applications that can benefit from all a cloud can offer – but these were designed for the cloud. That is why we call them cloud-native.

It is a matter of understanding where your product is:

  • If you have a product that runs on your premise, then moving to a cloud-ready environment is the first rational step
  • If it is a new application, then the goal is to create cloud-native from scratch

Why cloud?

Did you know that in 2020 more than 90% of companies will be on the cloud? Also, by 2023 this market will reach over $620 billion (according to stats from Report Linker). We got here because of the wide range of benefits of cloud computing like:

  • the easy of scalability
  • security
  • cost-saving (if cloud provider, services used, etc., are properly chosen)

Move your business to the cloud for better efficiency. Our experts can help you understand the necessary steps and the TCO for a cloud-ready movement to assure a maximized ROI for your business.  If you are looking for cloud-native or customized enterprise solutions, find out more, here.

Modernization in the music industry

Big Data

Big Data Music Publishing Management System

The big data music publishing management system project created a global data base for music. Next level music technology!

Unquestionably, music has a huge impact on people’s lives. Influencing the industry that affects the daily lives of the global population was as challenging, as it was a great source of pride.

Our work consisted in creating a global publishing management system based – together with our partner – that brings improved business functionality and efficiency to the music industry. It also facilitates business transformation and further centralization of some core business functions, such as songs management, contract briefing, copyright, registration, portal, royalty processing and tracking/reporting using the global data base created.

Our colleagues from the Enterprise solutions business line of AROBS worked on this music publishing management system.

Business challenge of this publishing management system project

The challenge was to replace an old and obsolete publishing management system that was suffering of decentralized and low-quality data. Thus we decreased the processing time and increased efficiency while working with multi-terabyte of data, in a global data base designed for this project.

Also, on the people level, the biggest challenge was to harmonize the work of developers from different continents and physically gather them for the intense research phase of this project.

The output was a cutting edge, truly singular system, that revolutionized music publishing and music technology.

AROBS Approach

We approached the challenge with incredible focus on research,  since the music industry was a domain where AROBS did not have previous experience. Together with our partner, we held intense meetings to analyze flows and the specificity of the industry. We were searching for blind spots where huge improvements were possible.

This approach allowed the team to transform the software developers into experts of the industry. Hence, they were able to increase overall efficiency and achieve an  18-fold improvement time-to-production.

Technologies

Since users are spread all around the world, it was important to have a robust system that is highly available and easily accessible. Therefore, the team used leading approaches like cloud-native solutions on AWS.

To ensure the persistence of the system, we used Cassandra – a distributed and fault-tolerant technology.

Other technologies used include: Cloud Foundry, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, Angular, Node.JS, HTML5, CSS3, responsive design.

Benefits and impact of the big data global data base for music

The revolutionary system created is the next level in music technology.

  • reduced time-to-production for new functionalities from 3 months to 5 days;
  • generates data that feeds over 2 million pages of PDFs each quarter;
  • can deal with a data increase of 1+ TB/year;
  • centralized data for a faster and more accurate reporting;
  • optimized data structures and modification tracking to simplify future audits;
  • decreased response time to user actions and needs;
  • operates with multi-terabyte of data in ways never seen before in the music industry.
